Determinants of household residential location choice among informal settlers in Port Harcourt

Informal settlements, sometimes called slums, are sites of significant environmental risk in developing cities. Despite its challenges, residents prefer to live informal settlements rather than planned allocated plots. This paper assesses the determinants households’ residential location decision an settlement Port Harcourt order gain understanding on what makes individuals consider a particular settlement. The study employs case approach and uses both indepth face-to-face interviews structured questionnaires waterfront households using Cluster sampling group into seven (7) zones based their capture information choice decisions respondents settlements. In each settlement, we interviewed two households, thereafter were administered 55 respondents’ household by trained graduate students who worked as enumerators. all total 14 conducted 385 administered. Out administered, 315 completed returned. results survey corroborated indebth interview revealed that growing informality not limited income level, but social networks (living close family or friends), livelihood opportunities, proximity work, commuting cost find accommodation, land for building support everyday life
